RAD Officer's Dagger made by the Eickhorn firm. Real nice condition overall. There is a small crack in the handle which can be seen in the close up picture. The opposite side is perfect. The blade of this RAD is almost mint with a very strong engraved 'Arbeit adelt'. The scabbard is dent free with some minor scratches. Overall, a very nice piece which would show good in a collection. $2400.
This was the very first design of RAD hewer. Worn by ALL ranks until the Officer version was introduced in 1938. The very first, initial production daggers had a complete, fully covered stag grip over the nickel steel hilt underneath. This meant each individual grip had to be hand trimmed and fitted. An expensive and lengthy process. This was soon dropped and the hilt redesigned to accommodate standard sized grip plates which were mass produced and easily and quickly fitted. Therefore these early production RAD hewers are very rare and sought after by collectors. Eickhorn were the only company to do this, so ‘full stag’ hewers only have the Eickhorn trademark. This is a very nice example. Very heavy nickel hilt fittings in near perfect condition. The full stag grips are quite smooth and a mid-tan colour. The huge bowie style blade is in near mint condition with a very crisp and clear motto. The reverse riccasso has the early small oval Eickhorn trademark used from 1933-35. The scabbard again is in excellent condition with near perfect nickel mounts. The scabbard body has its original black paint and is also in good condition. Many of these scabbards started life with a black ‘anodised’ or ‘blued’ finish to the metal. This just didn’t wear well and many scabbard were re-painted over the years either by the factory or the RAD men themselves. A REALLY nice example of a very hard-to-find dagger. $2225
